NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Authorities have arrested a Newport News man in connection with the 2017 disappearance and murder of Keir Johnson and her eight-month-old daughter, Chloe, marking a significant breakthrough in a case that has remained unsolved for nearly eight years.

Carlos A. Johnson Jr., 46, was taken into custody Friday at approximately 12:30 p.m. in Newport News. He has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder, police announced.

Keir Johnson, 34 at the time, and her infant daughter were last seen on April 30, 2017, in Hampton, Virginia. Two weeks later, Johnson’s vehicle was found abandoned in Newport News. Despite extensive efforts by local, state, and federal investigators, the case remained unsolved.

“We understand the deep emotional impact this situation has had on the family, our community, and our department,” said Newport News Police Chief Steve Drew. “As the investigation progressed, we had to confront the painful reality that this was not the case.”

Investigators emphasized their commitment to solving the case, with Drew stating, “This day has been a long time coming, especially for the family of Keir and Chloe. While we recognize that this arrest cannot bring them back, we sincerely hope it provides a sense of justice for their loved ones.”
