New York City Sanitation Worker Arrested for DWI in Bedford-Stuyvesant

BROOKLYN, NY — An off-duty employee of the New York City Department of Sanitation was arrested early Wednesday morning in Bedford-Stuyvesant on multiple alcohol-related driving charges, police said.

Anthony Smith, 45, was taken into custody at approximately 3:10 a.m. within the confines of the NYPD’s 79th Precinct. He faces charges including operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, driving while ability impaired, refusal to take a breath test, and possession of alcoholic beverages or cannabis in a motor vehicle on a highway.

Smith was off duty at the time of the arrest. No injuries or accidents were reported in connection to the incident.

Details about the circumstances leading to the traffic stop or arrest have not been released. It remains unclear whether Smith was operating a city-owned vehicle.

The Department of Sanitation has not publicly commented on the arrest.
