CARLISLE, P.A. — A 73-year-old woman was killed and a 74-year-old man remains in critical condition after a vehicle veered onto a sidewalk and struck the pair Friday evening in Carlisle, police said.
The incident occurred at approximately 8:17 p.m. at the intersection of South Hanover Street and West Pomfret Street. Carlisle Police and emergency personnel responded to the scene and found two pedestrians who had been hit by a vehicle that drove up onto the sidewalk.
Both victims were treated on scene and transported to area hospitals. The woman was later pronounced dead at the hospital, while the male victim is currently listed in critical condition.
The driver of the vehicle, identified as Martin Leroy Brinton, was arrested following an investigation that revealed signs of impairment. According to police, Brinton was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash.
“Brinton was arrested, transported to the hospital for treatment, and then to the Cumberland County Prison for processing and arraignment,” Carlisle Police said.
Driver charged with homicide by vehicle while DUI
Brinton faces multiple charges, including homicide by vehicle while driving under the influence. He is currently being held at the Cumberland County Prison. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for a later date.
Authorities have not released the identities of the victims, pending notification of family.
The fatal crash remains under investigation, with law enforcement reviewing surveillance footage and collecting witness statements from the scene.
