Baltimore, MD – A casual walk in the park turned into a $50,000 payday for a New Jersey man visiting relatives in Maryland, after he bought a Powerball ticket on a whim during a family outing in College Park.
On August 30, the out-of-state visitor decided to buy a $10 batch of Quick Pick tickets while stopping at Mundo Market on Edgewood Road. That night, one of his tickets matched four of the five white balls plus the red Powerball, landing a third-tier prize worth $50,000.
The jackpot for that drawing had reached $950 million and would later climb to $1.787 billion by the September 6 drawing. Though he didn’t hit the historic jackpot, the win was enough to make his Maryland trip one to remember.
The man, who claimed his prize at Maryland Lottery headquarters on September 8, has not made any specific plans for the money. He indicated he will continue playing Powerball in the future.
The ticket was sold at a College Park retailer, which does not receive a bonus for selling a winning ticket below the jackpot level. Maryland has seen a surge in ticket sales in recent weeks due to high jackpot activity.
