Deputies find man slumped at wheel as car idles through green light
STAFFORD, VA – A 22-year-old man was arrested early Saturday morning after deputies found him unconscious behind the wheel of a running vehicle that failed to move through a green light—while an open bottle of tequila sat in plain view.
Just after 2 a.m. near the intersection of Courthouse Road and Richmond Highway, deputies responded to reports of a possibly intoxicated driver. When they arrived, they found the vehicle still in gear, stopped at a green light, with the driver slumped over the steering wheel and his foot on the brake.
Deputy R. T. Philippsen approached the vehicle, while Deputy F. A. Martinez positioned his cruiser to block the vehicle from drifting into the intersection. Inside, they spotted an open bottle of tequila within reach of the driver.
After successfully waking the driver and ensuring the car was safely placed in park, deputies noted the man had glassy, bloodshot eyes and a strong odor of alcohol. Field sobriety tests were conducted, and the driver was taken into custody.
The driver was identified as O’Syrus Robinson, 22, of Stafford. He was charged with driving under the influence, failure to obey a traffic signal, and possessing an open container of alcohol while operating a vehicle. Robinson was held until sober and released on an unsecured bond.
