Seven guns seized in West Philly drug crackdown
PHILADELPHIA, PA – A months-long investigation into reported drug activity along a West Philadelphia commercial corridor culminated in arrests, multiple felony charges, and the seizure of firearms and narcotics tied to an alleged street-level distribution operation in the Wynnefield section of the city.
The Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office announced charges against Noah Simmons and Shafeeq Coleman following an investigation centered on the 1900 block of North 54th Street. The case stemmed from community complaints describing ongoing drug activity near Smiley’s Lucky Star convenience store at 1917 North 54th Street.
Investigators began surveillance in January after receiving reports of a chronic neighborhood nuisance. Over several weeks, officers observed suspected narcotics sales taking place both inside Alex Grocery and in front of Smiley’s Lucky Star. Evidence gathered during that period led to the execution of search and seizure warrants on residences and vehicles linked to the defendants.
Authorities recovered seven firearms from Simmons’ residence, including a weapon modified with a switch to function as a fully automatic firearm and another reported stolen. Ammunition, narcotics including bulk marijuana packaged in knotted bags and composition booklets, and $658 in cash were also seized.
Simmons, born November 27, 1999, faces multiple charges including possession with intent to deliver, criminal conspiracy, possession of an offensive weapon, criminal use of a communication facility, prohibited possession of a firearm, possession of drug paraphernalia, and multiple counts related to firearms violations.
Coleman, born January 24, 1994, is charged with possession with intent to deliver, criminal conspiracy, prohibited possession, possession of drug paraphernalia, and possession of an instrument of crime.
City and law enforcement officials said the case reflects continued efforts to address nuisance businesses and drug-related activity along key neighborhood corridors, emphasizing cooperation between investigators, prosecutors, and city leadership.
