Jury duty scam sparks warning in Lancaster County

Phone scam warning issued after jury duty threat calls reported in East Lampeter Township

EAST LAMPETER TWP, PA – A wave of alarming phone calls claiming missed jury duty and immediate jail time has surfaced in East Lampeter Township, prompting officials to warn residents after multiple citizens reported being targeted by an impersonation scam.

According to information released by East Lampeter Township Police, several residents reported receiving calls from a male identifying himself as a sergeant with the Lancaster County Police. Callers were told they failed to appear for jury duty and that a fine had been imposed, with payment demanded to avoid immediate incarceration.

Officials stressed the calls are fraudulent and designed to pressure victims into making quick payments. Law enforcement agencies do not contact individuals by phone to collect fines, request payment, or arrange in-person meetings to resolve jury duty issues.

Residents are urged not to provide personal, financial, or sensitive information to unknown callers and not to agree to meet anyone based on a phone call. Anyone who receives a suspicious call is advised to hang up and independently verify the claim by contacting the organization using an official, verified phone number.

The department is asking anyone who receives similar calls to report the incident immediately so patterns can be tracked and additional residents warned.
