STAFFORD TOWNSHIP, NJ – A dramatic rescue unfolded during a devastating fire in Stafford Township on February 13, when police officers caught a man who jumped from a second-story balcony to escape the flames. Authorities say the quick-thinking officers acted in seconds, saving the man from serious injury or death.

According to the Stafford Township Police Department, Sgt. Woodring, SMPO Brown, Ptl. Otte, and Ptl. O’Rourke responded to the blaze when they encountered the trapped resident attempting to flee the burning structure. Body-worn camera footage captured the tense moment as officers coordinated to position themselves beneath the balcony, catching the man midair.

“This incident is a powerful example of the dedication and courage of our officers,” said Chief James Haldenwang. “Their quick, selfless actions undoubtedly saved this man’s life, and I am awestruck by the heroics displayed.”

Officials said while the fire tragically claimed at least one life, the officers’ lifesaving efforts prevented the situation from becoming even more catastrophic. Emergency crews from multiple law enforcement, fire, and EMS units assisted at the scene, working through heavy smoke and flames to bring the fire under control.
