MANCHESTER TOWNSHIP, NJ — A 45-year-old Manchester man will serve a decade in state prison after admitting to a violent attack that left his 71-year-old mother with a fractured skull and other serious injuries, Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer announced.
Joseph Cavallaro was sentenced Thursday to 10 years in New Jersey State Prison following his guilty plea to attempted murder, with the term subject to the No Early Release Act requiring him to serve at least 85% before parole eligibility.
Violent assault left victim unconscious
The case stems from a June 27, 2025 incident at the Pine Acres Manor Mobile Home Community, where Manchester Township Police Department officers responded around 12:15 p.m. to a report of a woman in distress.
Officers forced entry into the home and found the victim suffering from significant injuries to her face and body. She was transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune for treatment and was later discharged.
An investigation by the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crime Unit and the Manchester Township Police Department Detective Bureau determined that the victim was Cavallaro’s mother.
Authorities said an argument between the two escalated into a physical assault, during which Cavallaro beat the victim until she lost consciousness.

Severe injuries detailed in investigation
Prosecutors said the victim sustained extensive injuries, including a concussion, fractured ribs, a fractured skull, and multiple facial fractures.
Cavallaro was taken into custody the same day without incident and has remained lodged in the Ocean County Jail since his arrest.
He formally entered his guilty plea to attempted murder on January 30, 2026, before Judge Guy P. Ryan, who also handed down the sentence.
Sentencing reflects seriousness of charge
Attempted murder carries significant penalties under New Jersey law, particularly when accompanied by severe bodily harm. The application of the No Early Release Act means Cavallaro must serve the majority of his sentence before becoming eligible for parole.
The case underscores the severity of domestic violence incidents involving vulnerable victims, especially elderly individuals.
What happens next
Cavallaro will continue serving his sentence in state prison under NERA guidelines, with parole eligibility only after completing at least 85% of the 10-year term.
No further court proceedings related to this case have been announced.
