Police say surveillance footage and ShotSpotter evidence led to arrests weapons seizures and juvenile gun charges
BOSTON, Mass. — A Roxbury shooting investigation fueled by surveillance footage and ShotSpotter technology has now led to multiple arrests, weapons seizures, and a major police operation involving SWAT officers and gang units across Boston.
Boston police said the investigation began the evening of April 15 after ShotSpotter alerted officers to gunfire near Abbotsford Street in Roxbury.
Responding officers located multiple spent shell casings and discovered ballistic damage to two parked vehicles, according to the Boston Police Department.
No shooting victims were found at the scene.
Detectives from District B-2 launched an extensive investigation that included reviewing city camera footage, private security video, and surveillance recordings from nearby residential buildings.
Investigators said the video evidence helped identify several people believed to be connected to the shooting.
On May 15, officers from the Youth Violence Strike Force and the Massachusetts State Police Gang Unit arrested 18-year-old Jahsan Mierez of Dorchester without incident.
During a search tied to the investigation, police said officers recovered a Glock handgun, a revolver, what appeared to be an assault-style rifle, and multiple rounds of ammunition.
Authorities said additional firearm charges are expected following the weapons recovery.
On May 20, police arrested a 16-year-old juvenile male from Dorchester near New Chardon Street in Boston.
Later that same day, members of the Youth Violence Strike Force, the Fugitive Unit, and the Boston Police SWAT Team executed a search warrant at a Dorchester residence connected to another suspect still being sought.
Police said officers recovered clothing matching what one suspect allegedly wore the night of the shooting.
Mierez faces charges including unlawful possession of a firearm, carrying a loaded firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, assault by means of a dangerous weapon, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, attempted assault and battery by discharge of a firearm, and discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a dwelling.
The juvenile suspect faces similar delinquency charges in Boston Juvenile Court.
