Toddler wounded as gunman opens fire inside DC apartment complex

Security camera captured the suspect after gunfire inside a Benning Road apartment complex left a toddler injured, police say

WASHINGTON, D.C. — A 2-year-old boy was hospitalized after being struck by gunfire inside a Northeast Washington apartment complex, and police are now asking for the public’s help identifying the suspect captured on surveillance video.

The shooting happened at approximately 9:50 p.m. Tuesday in the 1700 block of Benning Road Northeast, according to the Metropolitan Police Department.

Investigators said the suspect fired a gun inside an apartment complex before fleeing the area prior to officers arriving.

Responding officers found a 2-year-old boy inside an apartment suffering from a graze wound caused by the shooting. D.C. Fire and EMS transported the child to a local hospital for treatment.

Police said the child’s injuries were non-life-threatening.

Surveillance cameras in the area captured images and video of the suspect, who remains unidentified. Authorities released the footage Friday as part of an effort to generate leads in the case.

No arrests have been announced.

Anyone who can identify the suspect or has information about the shooting is asked to call the Metropolitan Police Department at (202) 727-9099 or text tips to 50411. The Metropolitan Police Department is offering a reward of up to $10,000 for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for a violent crime committed in the District of Columbia.

The investigation remains ongoing.
