Lindenwold, NJ – A Camden man fatally stabbed his girlfriend at her Lindenwold home before taking his own life later the same day, according to the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office.
Detectives identified the suspect as Harry Gibbs, 64, of Camden, who authorities say stabbed 53-year-old Marlene Carmichael multiple times at a residence on the 500 block of Bilper Avenue on Thursday, July 16.
Police and emergency responders were called to the home at approximately 11:39 a.m. after receiving a report of a stabbing.
Carmichael was found suffering from multiple stab wounds and was transported to Cooper University Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 2:22 p.m.
Investigation led detectives to suspect
During the investigation, detectives determined Gibbs, the victim’s boyfriend, was responsible for the fatal attack, according to Camden County Prosecutor Grace C. MacAulay and Lindenwold Police Chief Michael McCarthy.
Just over an hour after Carmichael was pronounced dead, officers with the Camden County Police Department responded to the 1100 block of MacArthur Drive in Camden for a report of a man inside a vehicle with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Gibbs was transported to Cooper University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at approximately 3:56 p.m.
Knife recovered from suspect’s vehicle
Investigators recovered both a firearm and a knife from Gibbs’ vehicle. Detectives later determined the knife was the weapon used in the fatal stabbing in Lindenwold.
Authorities said there is no ongoing threat to the public as the investigation continues.
