Mount Rainier, MD – The City of Mount Rainier has postponed plans to remove a large elm tree at the intersection of 36th Street and Bunker Hill Road after receiving numerous written objections from community members.
City officials announced that no removal work will take place until the matter has gone through the public hearing process required under the city’s Urban Forest Code.
“The City appreciates the time residents have taken to share their concerns,” the city said in a statement. “We have received your comments and understand the significance of this tree to many members of the community.”
City to reevaluate tree’s condition
Officials said they will reevaluate the condition of the elm and explore feasible alternatives before making a final decision.
The city noted that any review will continue to consider public safety, infrastructure needs and the overall goals of the project.
Under Chapter 12B of Mount Rainier’s Urban Forest Code, written objections trigger a formal review process.
Public hearing will be scheduled
The Mount Rainier Tree Commission will schedule a public hearing to receive comments from residents regarding the proposed tree removal.
City officials said notice of the hearing’s date and time will be provided once it has been scheduled.
Until that process is completed and the proposal has been reviewed in accordance with city procedures, the elm tree will remain in place.
