Newark police highlight amazon lockers to help residents avoid package theft

North Ward station offers secure pickup option for online orders

NEWARK, N.J. — Newark police are encouraging North Ward residents to use Amazon lockers at the city’s 7th Precinct to help protect online orders from package theft.

The Newark Department of Public Safety announced that Amazon lockers are available at the 7th Precinct, located at 159 N. 10th St., providing customers with a secure location to receive deliveries.

When a package is delivered to the assigned locker, customers receive a secure access code from Amazon by email. The code is entered at the locker terminal to retrieve the package.

According to the department, packages left in the locker for more than three days will be removed by Amazon to make room for new deliveries. Customers whose packages are removed because they were not picked up will receive refunds from Amazon for eligible items.

The initiative was highlighted by 7th Precinct Commander Capt. M. Hulse, Executive Officer Lt. G. Caballero and Community Service Officer J. Droz as a way to provide residents with a safer alternative for receiving deliveries.

Police also encourage anyone with information about criminal activity to call the department’s 24-hour Crime Stopper tip line at 1-877-NWK-TIPS (1-877-695-8477). Anonymous tips may also be submitted through the Newark Police Division website.
