Delaware State Police arrested a 24-year-old Hartly man after investigators linked him to two shooting incidents, including one in which bullets struck an occupied home before additional shots rang out nearby.

HARTLY, Del. — Delaware State Police have arrested a Hartly man accused of firing multiple rounds at an occupied residence and allegedly carrying out a second shooting weeks earlier in the same community.

According to investigators, troopers responded at approximately 8:30 p.m. Thursday to the unit block of Slaughter Station Road after receiving reports that gunfire had struck an occupied home. Authorities said an unknown suspect fired an unknown number of rounds into the residence, but no injuries were reported.

While troopers and detectives were investigating the scene, officials said additional gunshots were heard, and rounds struck tree branches overhead.

Suspect found nearby with apparent firearm

Investigators determined the shots were coming from a nearby residence on Judy’s Truck Drive.

When troopers arrived, they observed a man later identified as Dakota Carey, 24, of Hartly, exiting a detached garage while carrying what appeared to be a firearm. Police said Carey was taken into custody without incident.

Detectives subsequently determined Carey was responsible for the Thursday night shooting as well as a separate shooting incident that occurred in Hartly in July.

Investigation links suspect to earlier case

The earlier shooting remains part of the ongoing investigation, and authorities have not released additional details about that incident beyond confirming Carey has been identified as the suspect.

Police have not announced the formal charges filed against Carey or whether additional charges may be forthcoming as the investigation continues.

Investigators say two separate shooting incidents have now been connected to the same suspect, bringing an end to a case that involved gunfire striking an occupied residence and additional shots fired while law enforcement officers were already on the scene.
