New York City Husband Sentenced to Life in Prison for Murdering Wife

QUEENS, NY – Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz recently announced that Carmelo Mendoza, 44, was sentenced to 18 years to life in prison for the fatal stabbing of his wife, Yaquelin Collado, 45. The incident took place in their Jackson Heights apartment in July 2020.

Mendoza pleaded guilty to second-degree murder last month. According to the charges, Mendoza stabbed Collado multiple times in the chest, neck, and torso during an argument.

Collado was pronounced dead at a local hospital due to approximately 27 knife wounds. Mendoza was treated for self-inflicted injuries.
