Popcorn park closed on labor day, a great off-season jersey shore destination

FORKED RIVER, NJ – The Associated Humane Popcorn Park Shelter and Popcorn Park Animal Refuge closed their doors today due to an event at Miller Airport causing road closures.

The facility stated that all animals and operations are in good condition. They plan to reopen on September 4th, observing holiday hours.

Founded in 1977, the Associated Humane Popcorn Park Shelter and Popcorn Park Animal Refuge are operated by the Associated Humane Societies. The facility began as a sanctuary for animals that were sick, elderly, abandoned, abused, or injured, offering them a place where they could live out the rest of their lives in dignity.

The park got its name “Popcorn Park” due to the tradition of feeding popcorn to some of its non-carnivorous animals, a quirky detail that caught the public’s imagination. Over the years, it has grown from a small operation to a larger facility encompassing seven acres of land. It now houses a variety of animals, including farm animals, birds, and exotic species. The park is unique in that it is federally licensed as both a zoo and a shelter, and it also serves as an adoption center for domestic animals like cats and dogs.
