WASHINGTON, DC – A devastating traffic crash on I-295 has resulted in the death of a driver and injuries to five individuals, prompting an investigation by the Major Crash Investigations Unit of the D.C. Metro Police Department.
The incident unfolded on the morning of March 29, as a Dodge Ram 1500 pick-up was traveling northbound near the Nannie Helen Burroughs Avenue exit. Witnesses reported the truck was moving at a high rate of speed before it veered onto the right shoulder, colliding with a guard rail. In an attempt to re-enter the travel lane, the truck lost control, crashing into a cement jersey wall on the left side of the road.
Following the initial collision, the truck mounted the jersey wall, impacting a southbound Toyota Camry, before coming to a halt atop the wall and catching fire. The driver of the Dodge Ram 1500 was pronounced dead at the scene, while the passenger, critically injured, was rescued by an officer from the Sixth District and rushed to the hospital.
The crash also led to a Dodge Ram 3500 colliding with the displaced jersey wall in the southbound lanes, resulting in non-life-threatening injuries to the driver and three passengers.
The identity of the deceased is withheld pending family notification. Remarkably, the driver of the Toyota Camry escaped unharmed.
Authorities are urging anyone with information about this tragic event to contact the D.C. Metro Police Department at (202) 727-9099 or to submit tips via the TEXT TIP LINE at 50411
