Afternoon ambush near school leaves teen dead in DC

Teen killed and another wounded in broad daylight shooting tied to stolen car in Northeast DC

WASHINGTON, DC — A teenager was killed and another wounded after gunfire erupted in a Northeast neighborhood Monday afternoon, where investigators say the victims were inside a stolen vehicle when another car pulled alongside and opened fire.

The shooting was reported around 3:38 p.m. in the 4600 block of Minnesota Avenue NE, near Ron Brown High School. Responding officers found two victims suffering from gunshot wounds at the scene.

A 19-year-old identified as Tyreek Sheldon Moore was discovered inside a Kia, unconscious and not breathing. He was pronounced dead after lifesaving efforts failed. A second teenage victim was found outside the vehicle nearby and transported to a hospital for treatment.

Preliminary findings indicate the victims were traveling in the Kia, which had been reported stolen earlier in the day from Prince George’s County, when a second vehicle approached and gunfire was directed at them.

Police have released an image of an Acura believed to be connected to the shooting as they work to identify those involved.

Road closures were put in place along Minnesota Avenue NE between Meade and Quarles Streets, as well as the 4700 block of Nash Street NE between Minnesota Avenue and 48th Street NE during the investigation.

The case remains under active investigation. Anyone with information is urged to contact Metropolitan Police at 202-727-9099 or text tips to 50411.
