Akron standoff ends with fugitive found behind wall

Fire erupts as federal fugitive is captured after hours long barricade in Akron

Akron, OH – Flames, sirens, and a daylong standoff converged at a residential street in Akron, ending with federal agents pulling a wanted fugitive from a hidden space inside a home after hours of tension and a structure fire.

The arrest unfolded early Wednesday at a residence in the 200 block of Kenilworth Avenue, where members of the U.S. Marshals led Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force moved in to arrest Tristan Dent, 35. Dent was wanted by federal authorities on drug-related charges stemming from a large indictment involving nearly a dozen defendants, with Dent listed as the final outstanding fugitive.

As task force members attempted to take Dent into custody, he barricaded himself inside the home, prompting a request for assistance from the Akron Police Department SWAT Team. While officers worked to establish communication and secure a surrender, a fire broke out on the second level of the residence, drawing a response from the Akron Fire Department.

Fire crews spent several hours containing the blaze before officers were able to safely search the home. During that search, Dent was discovered hiding behind a false wall, concealed behind a dryer in the basement. He was taken into custody without further incident.

Authorities said the case dates back more than a year.
