Beloved Red Bank Deli Closing After 120 Years of Operation

RED BANK, NJ – Red Bank has changed many times over the last century. There have been ups and downs in the town. In the 80s, it became a symbol of urban decay at the Jersey Shore, but a revitalization saw it become one of the most visited downtown centers in the region. Thousands of small businesses have come and gone over that time, but one that remained throughout was Citarella’s Market, a family-owned business on Prospect Avenue that opened in 1901.

Today, Friday, July 8th is the last day for Citarella’s Market. The family announced they will be shutting down after 120 years of operation.

“I am sad to announce that my family’s business Citarella’s Market in Red Bank NJ which my Great Grandfather started in 1901 will be closing on July 9th,” owner Andrew Citarella said. “My brother and his wife have decided to retire. I have been running the business for my brother the last 15 months and although I had always believed I would be the only Citarella son who was not a butcher fate had other plans for me.”

The business was started by Andrew Citarella in 1901 and will be shut down by Andrew Citarella in 2022.

“We are all very sad to see a business that has been in our family for 121 years end, but 121 years is no doubt a good run. Ironically it was started in 1901 by an Andrew Citarella cutting meat and in 2022 an Andrew Citarella will be its last butcher. Stop in and say goodbye,” he said.
