Boston cops foil $2.5K sunglasses heist at Prudential

Shoplifters busted in two separate Back Bay thefts as officers make quick arrests

Boston, MA — Two suspects were arrested in separate shoplifting incidents just a day apart in Boston’s Back Bay, after officers from District D-4 responded quickly to retail theft reports at Dick’s Sporting Goods and the Prudential Center.

The first arrest happened around 12:20 p.m. on Friday when officers were called to Dick’s Sporting Goods at 760 Boylston Street. Store staff reported that earlier in the day, a man had loaded a tennis bag with merchandise and left it inside the store before walking out. A few hours later, the same individual returned to retrieve the concealed items and attempted to walk out with the stolen goods.

Officers intervened as the suspect exited the store, recovering merchandise valued at $745. The suspect, identified as 20-year-old Yeejin Choi of Boston, was arrested and will face charges of Larceny Under $1,200 in Boston Municipal Court.

Less than 30 hours later, at around 5:50 p.m. on Saturday, officers conducting a patrol inside the Prudential Mall were alerted by employees at Sunglass Hut that a man had just stolen several pairs of sunglasses and was headed for the exit. Officers located and detained the suspect without incident. A total of seven sunglasses, valued at approximately $2,492, were recovered.

The suspect, identified as 39-year-old Mark Busuito of Boston, was arrested and is expected to face charges including Larceny Over $1,200 and Common & Notorious Thief — a designation used under Massachusetts law for repeat theft offenders.

Both individuals will be arraigned in Boston Municipal Court.
