Police say a K-9 track helped in the search for Braydien Jenkins McKenzie who was also wanted on three active warrants
CUMBERLAND, MD – A reported break-in turned into an early-morning manhunt Saturday after police say a 24-year-old man forced his way into a Cumberland apartment, assaulted the people inside, took their belongings and escaped through a window before being captured.
Cumberland Police responded at approximately 3:23 a.m. to the 1500 block of Oldtown Road for a reported breaking and entering in progress.
When officers arrived, they observed signs of an attempted forced entry on a door and could hear an altercation taking place, according to police.
Officers entered the apartment, where the victims identified Braydien Jenkins McKenzie, 24, of Cumberland, as the alleged assailant.
Police said McKenzie assaulted the victims and took some of their belongings before leaving through a window.
One officer established a K-9 track in an effort to locate McKenzie while other officers remained at the apartment to assist with treating one victim’s injuries.
Police eventually located McKenzie and took him into custody.
Investigators said McKenzie also had three active warrants at the time of his arrest.
He was charged with robbery, home invasion, first-degree burglary, third-degree burglary, fourth-degree burglary, first-degree assault, two counts of second-degree assault, theft, disorderly conduct and obstructing and hindering.
McKenzie was taken to Central Booking and later appeared before a District Court commissioner.
He was ordered held without bond at the Allegany County Detention Center.
The charges are allegations and have not been proven in court.
