A Camden man has been arrested and charged with murder in connection with a fatal shooting that left a 24-year-old city resident dead earlier this month.
Authorities have charged a Camden man with murder following a shooting that began with a ShotSpotter alert and ended with the death of a 24-year-old victim, according to the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office.
Eric Irizarry, 45, is charged with first-degree murder in the death of Luis J. Bonet, 24, of Camden. He also faces charges of unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.
ShotSpotter alert led police to victim
The shooting occurred at approximately 12:23 a.m. on June 9 when officers with the Camden County Police Department responded to the 200 block of Morse Street after receiving a ShotSpotter activation.
When officers arrived, they located Bonet suffering from a gunshot wound in the area of Baird Boulevard and Boyd Street.
“Upon arrival, officers located a gunshot victim – identified as Bonet – in the area of Baird Boulevard and Boyd Street,” the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office said.
Bonet was transported to Cooper University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at approximately 12:36 a.m.
Detectives identified suspect
The investigation was conducted by detectives from the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit and the Camden County Police Department.
Authorities said investigators determined that Irizarry was responsible for the shooting.
“During the investigation, detectives from the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit and Camden County Police Department determined Irizarry was the individual responsible for shooting Bonet,” prosecutors said.
Suspect surrendered to police
Irizarry was formally charged on June 10.
Two days later, he surrendered without incident at the Camden County Police Department and was remanded to the Camden County Correctional Facility pending court proceedings.
The homicide investigation remains active.
