EDGEWOOD, MD – A firefighter passing through a Harford County neighborhood discovered a blaze that tore through a two-story home Friday evening.
The fire broke out around 5:01 p.m. at 137 Redbud Road, according to officials.
No injuries were reported, but damages are estimated at $50,000.
Investigators said the fire originated in the wood-framed chimney of the home and was ruled accidental, caused by an unspecified failure involving the chimney flue.
Fire discovered by off-duty firefighter
An off-duty firefighter noticed smoke and alerted local crews, prompting a swift response from the Abingdon Fire Company. About 35 firefighters arrived on the scene and brought the fire under control within 20 minutes.
Officials said the dwelling was equipped with smoke alarms, but the affected area was unprotected. There were no fire alarms or sprinklers installed in the home.
Investigation underway by state fire marshals
Fire investigators examined the structure Friday night to confirm the point of origin and mechanical failure within the chimney. No criminal activity is suspected, and no arrests were made.
Authorities reminded residents to have chimneys inspected and cleaned regularly, especially during colder months when fireplace use increases.
