Civic hits tree 24 year old driver dies in Clayton

CLAYTON, DE — A 24-year-old Wilmington man died early Tuesday morning when his vehicle crashed into a tree after failing to stop at a stop sign, according to Delaware State Police.

The single-vehicle collision occurred around 3 a.m. on July 15 as a Honda Civic was heading westbound on Sudlers Row near the intersection with Blackiston Church Road. Investigators say the car was moving at a high rate of speed and failed to stop at the intersection. It continued off the road and struck a tree.

The driver, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was pronounced dead at the scene. His name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

Troop 3’s Collision Reconstruction Unit closed the roadway for about three and a half hours while conducting the investigation and clearing the scene.

The crash remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact Master Corporal J. Lane at (302) 698-8457. Tips may also be submitted via private Facebook message to the Delaware State Police or to Delaware Crime Stoppers at 1-800-847-3333.

Support services are available to those affected by this incident. The Delaware State Police Victim Services Unit can be reached at 1-800-VICTIM-1 (1-800-842-8461) or DSP_VictimServicesMail@delaware.gov.
