Coatesville father charged after allegedly stabbing his 3-month-old baby

COATESVILLE, P.A. – A Coatesville man has been charged with attempted homicide and aggravated assault after allegedly stabbing his 3-month-old baby in the abdomen during a horrific domestic incident Thursday morning, authorities announced.

According to the Chester County District Attorney’s Office and Coatesville Police Department, 44-year-old Michael Phillips was arrested and charged after police responded to a home on the 2000 block of Smithbridge Drive at approximately 11:36 a.m. for reports of a stabbing.

Investigators say the child’s mother told officers that Phillips made disturbing statements about needing to “sacrifice the baby” before attacking with a knife. She said he tried to stab the infant multiple times, striking him once in the abdomen. The mother grabbed the baby and her 9-year-old son and fled the residence, but Phillips allegedly followed, snatched the infant from her arms, and threw the child into the snow. She shielded the baby with her body until help arrived.

Responding officers and emergency crews from the Washington Hose Ambulance Company and Westwood Paramedic Company rushed the infant to the hospital. As of Thursday night, the child remained hospitalized and receiving treatment for serious injuries.

Chester County District Attorney Christopher de Barrena-Sarobe praised the quick response of first responders, calling their actions “heroic” and noting their efforts “gave this infant a chance to survive.”

Coatesville Police Chief Jack Laufer also commended his officers, saying, “I am incredibly proud of all the first responders who stepped up in the wake of yesterday’s tragedy and am thankful for their partnership.”
