Silver Spring, MD – More than four years after a violent carjacking on Georgia Avenue, Montgomery County detectives have arrested and charged a District Heights man they say was responsible for the attack.
According to the Montgomery County Department of Police, 23-year-old Daymonte Antonyio Jones has been charged in connection with the July 5, 2022, carjacking in the 8700 block of Georgia Avenue. Jones was arrested on Aug. 31 and is being held without bond at the Montgomery County Detention Center.
Victim seriously injured during struggle
Police said the incident unfolded at about 7:45 p.m. when the victim returned to her parked vehicle and discovered a man sitting in the driver’s seat. A struggle followed as she attempted to stop the theft.
Investigators said the victim was dragged along the roadway during the confrontation, suffering significant injuries before the suspect drove away in her vehicle. Authorities said the stolen vehicle was later crashed after a brief pursuit into Washington, D.C.
“Through the course of the investigation, detectives identified Jones as the suspect and obtained an arrest warrant charging him with carjacking,” the Montgomery County Department of Police said in a statement.
Arrest follows lengthy investigation
Detectives with the Montgomery County Department of Police Major Crimes Division continued investigating the case after the carjacking and ultimately identified Jones as the suspect. An arrest warrant was obtained before he was taken into custody on Aug. 31.
The case highlights the long-term investigative work that can continue long after violent crimes occur. Georgia Avenue is one of Silver Spring’s busiest travel corridors, and authorities continue to pursue cases involving violent offenses even years after the initial incident.
Police have not released additional details about the investigation or whether any further charges are pending. Jones remains in custody without bond while the case proceeds through the court system.
