A Virginia resident shopping on Facebook Marketplace discovered their bank account had been hit with unauthorized charges after making an online purchase, deputies said.
STAFFORD COUNTY, Va. — A Facebook Marketplace purchase took an unexpected turn after a Stafford County resident discovered several unauthorized transactions on their bank account, according to the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies responded to Woodleigh Lane at about 6:50 a.m. Monday for a report of fraud involving unauthorized bank activity.
Investigators said the victim had purchased an item through Facebook Marketplace before noticing multiple transactions on their account that they did not authorize.
The victim immediately notified their bank, which canceled the affected card.
Deputies said a police report was needed as part of the bank’s investigation into the fraudulent charges.
The incident remains under investigation.
