Father Arrested After Young Son Killed by Gun

Cumberland, MD – Cumberland Police responded to a report of a 5-year-old male brought to the emergency room at UPMC, Cumberland, with a gunshot wound on Wednesday at approximately 11:30 a.m.

The Cumberland Police Department, in coordination with the Allegany County Combined Criminal Investigation Unit and Allegany County Child Protective Services, commenced an investigation. Initial findings indicate that the child, under the care of his father, Warin Foster, 31, discovered an unlocked, loaded handgun at their Glen Street residence. While playing with the firearm, the child allegedly shot himself.

Despite efforts by hospital staff, the child succumbed to his injuries.

Warin Torae Foster has been arrested and charged with manslaughter, reckless endangerment, and allowing firearm access to a minor. Additional charges are anticipated as the investigation continues. Foster is currently awaiting his initial court appearance.

Chief Ternent emphasized the tragedy of the incident, stating, “It is so tragic that a child has lost their life due to the careless actions of a parent. As adults, we have a responsibility and moral obligation to keep our kids safe. This responsibility is even greater with gun owners. We must work harder to keep our community safe.”
