Fire destroys South Main Street building in Akron, demolition underway

AKRON, OH – A late-night fire tore through a commercial building on South Main Street Tuesday, leaving behind heavy damage and forcing city officials to order an immediate demolition of the structure.

Akron Police said South Main Street remains closed between East Emerling Avenue and Brighton Drive as fire crews continue to extinguish remaining hot spots at 1431 South Main Street. The blaze, which broke out Tuesday night, engulfed the building and caused structural instability throughout the property.

Firefighters worked through the night battling the flames and ensuring nearby structures were protected from spreading embers. No injuries have been reported, though the full extent of the damage has not yet been determined.

Due to the building’s compromised condition, city officials announced plans to begin demolition immediately following fire extinguishment. The closure of South Main Street is expected to remain in effect until approximately 8 p.m. Wednesday evening while crews work on-site.

Investigators have not yet released a cause for the fire.
