Phony loan pitch tricks Stafford resident into wiring cash

Stafford County, VA – What sounded like financial help turned into a costly trap after a resident wired money to a loan company that never existed.

The fraud was reported Feb. 2 at about 1:45 p.m. on Courthouse Road. The victim told deputies they were contacted by someone claiming to represent a loan company and were persuaded to wire funds as part of the loan process.

The victim later discovered the company was not legitimate and that the money had been sent to a scammer. The case is being investigated as wire fraud.
