Fugitive arrested after DC woman gunned down in broad daylight

Man arrested in Maryland for August killing of woman in Brookland home shooting

Washington, DC – A 32-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of a woman inside her Northeast DC home, more than two months after the deadly incident shocked the Brookland neighborhood in broad daylight.

The shooting took place on the morning of Wednesday, August 13, just after 11:00 a.m., in the 3300 block of 15th Street NE. Fifth District officers responding to the call found 36-year-old Mignon Brown-Massey inside the residence, suffering from gunshot wounds. Though she was still breathing when first responders arrived, she died shortly after being transported to a hospital.

On Tuesday, members of the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force located and arrested Darryn Bynum Jr., 32, in Germantown, Maryland. He was transported to the Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide Branch and formally charged with Second Degree Murder While Armed, pursuant to a D.C. Superior Court arrest warrant.

Authorities have not disclosed a motive or details on the relationship between the suspect and the victim. The arrest ends an intensive two-month manhunt that stretched across the DC-Maryland line.

Brown-Massey’s death drew attention across Northeast DC, as neighbors reacted to the mid-morning violence inside a residential block typically known for its quiet atmosphere. The incident marked one of several homicides in the area over the summer.

Bynum remains in custody as the case proceeds through the court system.
