Washington, DC – A 61-year-old Southeast DC man is in custody after a gunshot rang out Monday morning on Ayers Place, sending another man to the hospital and prompting a swift police response that led to an arrest and the seizure of a loaded firearm.

The shooting occurred just before 8 a.m. in the 4900 block of Ayers Place Southeast, when Sixth District officers were called to the scene for reports of gunfire. They arrived to find an adult male victim suffering from a gunshot wound, conscious and breathing. The victim was transported to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment.

Shortly afterward, officers located and stopped a suspect in the 4500 block of Benning Road Northeast. A search warrant executed at his residence turned up a loaded gun, leading investigators to arrest Matthew Lee Murphy, 61, of Southeast.

Murphy was charged with Assault with a Dangerous Weapon (Gun), and remains in custody pending further proceedings. Authorities have not released additional details about what led to the shooting or the relationship, if any, between the suspect and the victim.

The incident marks another case of daytime gun violence in the District, occurring on a residential street in Southeast during a time when many residents were just beginning their workday.

The victim’s condition as of Tuesday morning has not been disclosed.
