Hagerstown Man Sentenced to Life Plus 15 Years for Attempted Murder and Firearm Charges

July 11, 2024

Frederick, MD — Lookman-Khalil Abolajo Bello was sentenced to life plus 15 years in the Department of Corrections for attempted first-degree murder and multiple firearm-related charges. The sentence was handed down by Judge Julia Martz-Fisher in Frederick County Circuit Court on July 10.

Bello faced charges of use of a firearm in the commission of a crime of violence, use of a high-capacity magazine in the commission of a crime of violence, possession of a firearm by a person with a prior crime of violence conviction, possession of ammunition by a person with a prior crime of violence conviction, and fleeing police. In February 2024, Judge Martz-Fisher found Bello guilty after a seven-day bench trial.

The charges stem from an incident on March 18, 2022, when Deputy First Class Christian Lucente of the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office attempted to stop a vehicle traveling at 94 mph near I270/Rte.85. The vehicle, driven by Bello, failed to stop and led police on a brief pursuit to Kingscrest Apartments in Frederick. Bello exited the vehicle and fled on foot, eventually pulling out an unserialized Polymer80 9mm handgun with an extended magazine and firing 12 rounds at DFC Lucente. Several bullets struck the apartment building behind DFC Lucente, who returned fire, incapacitating Bello.

Deputies apprehended Bello and provided emergency medical treatment until EMS arrived. Bello was transported to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma before being transferred to the Frederick County Adult Detention Center.
