Juvenile Killed, Two Burn Victims Airlifted After Early-Morning House Fire in Perth Amboy

A juvenile died and two other people suffered serious burn injuries following a residential fire that erupted on Chauncey Street in Perth Amboy early Friday morning.

Perth Amboy, N.J. – One juvenile was killed and two individuals were airlifted to a regional burn center after a devastating residential fire broke out in Perth Amboy early Friday, city officials announced.

The fire was reported at approximately 2:45 a.m. on Chauncey Street, prompting a large emergency response from police, firefighters and EMS personnel.

According to a joint statement issued by Mayor Helmin J. Caba and the City of Perth Amboy, police received a 911 call reporting the blaze shortly before 3 a.m.

“First responders arrived within minutes and immediately began assisting occupants from the residence,” city officials said. “Emergency medical personnel responded to treat the injured.”

Two individuals suffering from burn injuries were transported by medical helicopter to a regional burn center for treatment.

Fire brought under control with mutual aid assistance

The Perth Amboy Fire Department quickly brought the fire under control with assistance from several neighboring agencies.

Officials said firefighters from Woodbridge, Hopelawn, Sayreville and Colonia responded to assist, along with Hackensack Meridian Health EMS.

Despite rescue efforts, authorities confirmed that one juvenile died as a result of the fire.

“Tragically, one juvenile lost their life as a result of the incident,” the city said in its statement.

Several responders also injured

In addition to the fatalities and serious injuries suffered by residents, officials reported that a firefighter, a police officer and one civilian sustained minor injuries during the emergency response.

All three were treated and later released.

The fire remains under investigation by the Perth Amboy Police Department, Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office and Perth Amboy Fire Department.

Mayor offers condolences

Mayor Helmin J. Caba expressed condolences to the victim’s family and thanked emergency responders who worked at the scene.

“This is a devastating loss for a family and for our community,” Caba said. “On behalf of the City of Perth Amboy, I extend my deepest condolences to everyone affected by this tragedy.”

“I want to thank our police officers, firefighters, EMS personnel, and mutual aid partners who responded to the scene and worked tirelessly under difficult circumstances,” the mayor added.

“As we continue to learn more, I ask our community to keep the family in their thoughts and respect their privacy during this painful time.”

Officials said no additional information is being released at this time out of respect for the family and because the investigation remains active.
