Delmar man arrested after violent home invasion turns into knife assault

Delmar, DE – A quiet overnight return home turned violent when a Delmar man allegedly forced his way into a residence and attacked the homeowner with a knife, ending with his arrest after a brief chase early Monday morning.

The incident occurred around 2:10 a.m. in the 34000 block of Bi-State Boulevard, where troopers responded to reports of an assault involving a weapon. Investigators said a man later identified as Mario E. Padilla Caballero, 35, had already forced entry into the home before the 40-year-old resident arrived.

When the homeowner entered the residence, he confronted Padilla Caballero, who is known to him. A physical struggle followed, during which investigators said Padilla Caballero cut the victim with a knife. The victim suffered minor injuries.

As troopers arrived on scene, Padilla Caballero fled the residence on foot but was taken into custody without incident a short distance away.

Padilla Caballero was transported to Troop 5, where he was charged and arraigned in Justice of the Peace Court 3. He was committed to Sussex Correctional Institution on a $56,201 cash bond.

He faces multiple felony charges, including first-degree home-invasion burglary causing physical injury, possession of a deadly weapon during the commission of a felony, second-degree assault, and aggravated menacing, along with additional related offenses.
