RICHMOND, VA — Virginia Lottery players struck it big Tuesday night when the rare and popular combination 4-4-4-4 hit in the Pick 4 game, resulting in a massive $7.9 million payout.
The June 3 night drawing brought a windfall for thousands of players who collectively wagered $438,939 on the winning combination. The payout amounted to 18 times the revenue collected for that drawing, according to the Virginia Lottery.
Quadruple-digit numbers like 4-4-4-4 are among the most heavily played combinations in the Pick 4 game. A $1 exact-order ticket nets a $5,000 prize, making such drawings particularly lucrative when repeating digits hit.
Pick 4 drawings are conducted twice daily — at 1:59 p.m. and 11 p.m. — with odds of 1 in 10,000 to match all four numbers in the correct order.
Virginia Lottery officials did not release the number of winning tickets sold, but based on the payout figures, more than 1,500 players likely hit the jackpot with exact-order bets.
Lottery sees rare payout surge as players cash in
The surge in winnings came from more than 5,300 licensed retailers statewide and digital platforms like the Virginia Lottery app and website, which all offer access to the daily game.
While Pick 4 is a fixed-prize game, the volume of bets on certain combinations can lead to significant payout spikes when popular numbers hit.
The Virginia Lottery uses its proceeds to support public K-12 education. In Fiscal Year 2024, the Lottery contributed over $934 million to schools across the Commonwealth, comprising about 10 percent of the state’s K-12 education funding.
