Man gets 22 years for brutal ax attack on coworker

Ax attack on Long Beach street ends with 22-year prison sentence

Mineola, NY — A violent early morning ambush involving an ax has led to a 22-year prison sentence for a Long Beach man who attacked a former coworker, leaving the victim with life-threatening injuries.

Anthony Calvo, 35, was sentenced May 1 after pleading guilty to attempted murder in the second degree in connection with the February 2025 attack.

Prosecutors said the victim, a 60-year-old taxi dispatcher, was walking home from work around 5:50 a.m. when Calvo approached from behind on Arizona Avenue and struck him multiple times with an ax.

The victim sustained severe injuries to his head, face, and arm, requiring multiple surgeries. After the attack, he was able to reach his home and alert a family member, who called 911.

Investigators used surveillance footage showing the suspect fleeing on a white electric bicycle. A later search of Calvo’s residence recovered items including a bicycle and mask linked to the incident.

Calvo, a former employee of the same taxi company, was arrested in March 2025.

He will serve 22 years in prison following the sentencing in Nassau County Court.
