Maryland Retiree Turns Last Minute Ticket Into $50K Payday

Nottingham retiree wins $50,000 on Maryland Lottery $5,000,000 LUXE scratch-off

BALTIMORE, Md. – A Nottingham resident and former CEO claimed a $50,000 Maryland Lottery prize after purchasing a $50 $5,000,000 LUXE scratch-off ticket at a Perry Hall retailer, turning a last-minute decision into a significant payout.

The Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Agency confirmed the winning ticket was purchased at Perry Hall Liquors, located at 8673 Belair Road in Perry Hall, Baltimore County. The winner, a regular lottery player, had initially bought the final ticket in a pack, which turned out to be a non-winner, and nearly chose not to continue playing.

Second chance leads to $50K win

Faced with the option of opening a new pack, the retiree hesitated, noting skepticism about whether the first ticket in a fresh roll could produce a winner. Instead of walking away, he decided to take the chance — a decision that resulted in a $50,000 third-tier prize.

Neither the player nor the store clerk expected the outcome, according to Maryland Lottery officials, underscoring the unpredictable nature of scratch-off games.

The winner said he has had prior success playing the lottery, with a previous top prize of $2,500 on a Pick 4 game, but this marks his largest win to date.

Plans for winnings and background

The Nottingham man, who retired in 2011 after serving as CEO of a deli chain, said he plans to invest the winnings in high-interest certificates of deposit and savings accounts. He shared the news with only a small circle of close friends.

With more time in retirement, he said he focuses on exercise and fitness-related activities, and the prize will add financial flexibility without significantly changing his lifestyle.

Game details and remaining prizes

The $5,000,000 LUXE scratch-off game launched in February and remains one of Maryland Lottery’s highest-value instant ticket offerings. As of this week, all three top prizes of $5 million remain unclaimed, along with 10 prizes valued at $200,000 and numerous smaller payouts.

Scratch-off games continue to play a major role in Maryland Lottery revenue, contributing to funding for education and other state programs while maintaining strong player interest through high-value prizes and frequent wins.
