New Jersey to force new schools to have solar panels

TRENTON, N.J. — New legislation would require solar energy components to be included in certain school construction projects managed by the New Jersey Schools Development Authority (SDA).

Under the bill, any new SDA district school facilities project advanced by the development authority after the issuance of new state bonds must incorporate solar energy systems, such as solar panels. The mandate applies only to projects financed fully or partially by bond proceeds authorized under existing law after the bill’s enactment.

The measure affects the 31 SDA districts, formerly known as Abbott districts, where the state funds all or most school construction costs. The goal is to integrate renewable energy into new school construction, potentially lowering long-term energy costs and supporting the state’s broader clean energy objectives.

Development authority may update design models

The bill also authorizes the development authority to update its model school design program as needed to ensure compliance with the new solar energy requirement.

According to the bill’s statement, the provision takes effect immediately and applies to any eligible project advanced after new state bond issuances.

The proposal represents another step in New Jersey’s effort to expand renewable energy use in public infrastructure projects.
