NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Newport News Police Department is asking for the public’s help in identifying a suspect involved in an attempted robbery and assault at a retail store along Jefferson Avenue.

The incident occurred Friday, February 13, at the Burlington Coat Factory located in the 12100 block of Jefferson Avenue. According to Newport News police, officers were later dispatched after store employees reported the incident, which involved a suspect attempting to steal merchandise before assaulting an employee.

Suspect fled toward Patrick Henry Mall

Police said the individual entered the store around 10:30 p.m. and was seen placing merchandise into a duffel bag. When confronted by an employee, the suspect assaulted the worker and fled the business without taking any items.

Authorities said the suspect was last seen heading north on foot in the direction of Patrick Henry Mall. No injuries details about the employee have been released.

Public asked to provide tips
