BALTIMORE, Md. — Maryland environmental crews responded Tuesday to an estimated 100-gallon oil spill in the Fells Point area, according to a statement from the Maryland Department of the Environment.
The spill, described as having an unknown origin, prompted an immediate response from the agency’s Emergency Response Team. Officials noted the oil’s reddish color is due to dye added to the substance.
“Our Emergency Response Team is currently in Fells Point responding to an approx. 100 gallon oil spill of unknown origin. The red color is coming from dye in the oil,” the department said in a message shared by city officials.
The U.S. Coast Guard and a private cleanup contractor are also involved in containment and cleanup efforts, working alongside state personnel. The exact location and extent of the environmental impact have not yet been disclosed.
Authorities advised residents, patrons, and visitors in the area to remain aware of cleanup operations, while stressing that further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
Cleanup efforts ongoing as investigation continues
As of Tuesday afternoon, no cause had been confirmed for the spill, and it remains unclear whether any water sources or wildlife were affected. Fells Point, a popular waterfront destination in southeast Baltimore, features restaurants, residences, and marina access.
The Maryland Department of the Environment said it would continue working with federal and local partners to manage the situation and investigate the source.
