Patient snaps and attacks healthcare worker in Utica

Hospital room turns violent as patient attacks healthcare worker

Utica, NY — A hospital visit escalated into violence when a patient allegedly attacked a healthcare provider inside a room at Wynn Hospital, leaving the worker injured.

Police responded around 1:20 p.m. Thursday after receiving a report of an assault involving a patient and medical staff.

According to investigators, the provider was speaking with the patient about a treatment plan when the individual became upset, rushed toward them, and slammed the door shut, blocking any escape.

Authorities said the suspect then began striking the provider in the head and face. The victim was able to call for help, causing the suspect to pause long enough for the provider to escape the room.

Hospital staff intervened and prevented further violence. The injured provider was taken to the emergency department for treatment.

The suspect, identified as 28-year-old Thomas Gibbons of Sherrill, was later discharged from the hospital and taken into custody by police.

Gibbons was transported to the Utica Police Department and charged with second-degree assault.
