QUEENS, N.Y. — All six individuals charged in a 2024 attack on two NYPD officers outside a Long Island City hotel have been sentenced, Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz announced.
The incident occurred around 4:20 a.m. on June 17, 2024, when officers conducting a welfare check on three unsupervised children riding bicycles near 38-17 12th Street were surrounded and assaulted by a group of adults.
Miguel Chiluisa, 24, of Roosevelt Avenue in Corona, and Natali Iza, 28, whose address was not disclosed, both pleaded guilty to two counts of attempted assault in the second degree. Supreme Court Justice Leigh Cheng sentenced each to one to three years in prison. Christian Taipe, 31, of 36th Avenue in Astoria, also pleaded guilty to similar charges and received the same sentence.
Alejandro Munoz, 43, Juan Munoz, 26, and Karina Navarro-Chavez, 43, all of 10th Street in Long Island City, pleaded guilty to riot in the second degree and were each sentenced to 364 days in jail.
According to court documents, Iza initiated the altercation by yelling at and pushing one of the officers. Chiluisa then threw a child’s bicycle at the officers, while Navarro-Chavez struck an officer on the head with an unidentified object. The group collectively punched, shoved, and kicked the officers.
One officer managed to handcuff Chiluisa, who later escaped and was found an hour later at a nearby subway station. Iza and Taipe turned themselves in the next day, while the remaining suspects were arrested at the scene.
Both officers sustained injuries and were treated at a local hospital.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Dina Hodges of the Felony Trial Bureau IV.
