Suspect Arrested in Foley Park Stabbing Incident

FOLEY, Alabama – Bernard C. Abney, 40, of Mobile, has been arrested in connection with the stabbing of a woman in Heritage Park, Foley. The arrest, made on Saturday, was announced by Foley Police Chief Thurston Bullock, with Abney now being held at the Mobile Metro Jail.

The incident occurred on the Wilbourne Antique Rose Trail in Heritage Park on Wednesday evening. Foley police received a 911 call at 5:40 p.m., reporting that a woman, who had run into a local business, claimed she had been stabbed. Upon arrival, police found the woman with stab wounds to her arm, torso, and thigh. She was transported to University Hospital and has since been released, now recovering at home. Chief Bullock praised the victim’s strength and tenacity, noting that her actions likely ended the attack and saved her life.

Abney, who reportedly spent 18 years in prison on a rape charge, is set to face one felony count each of second-degree assault (assault with a deadly weapon) and first-degree attempted rape. His arrest was the result of a collaborative effort involving multiple agencies, the media, and community members. Mayor Ralph Hellmich commended the police force and the teamwork that led to the swift arrest, emphasizing the rarity of such crimes in Foley but acknowledging the anxiety they cause in the community.

This arrest has raised concerns about the state’s early release policies, with Mayor Hellmich expressing disappointment over Abney’s early release and questioning his rehabilitation. Chief Bullock described the investigation as an “all hands on deck” case, with the team effort of employees, detectives’ diligent investigation, and public tips leading to the identification of Abney as a suspect.

The Foley Police Department continues to investigate the incident and encourages anyone with further information to contact them at 251-943-4431.
