WASHINGTON, D.C. — A 17-year-old has been arrested and charged as an adult in connection with a fatal hit and run that killed a pedestrian in Northwest D.C. last month.
On Tuesday, June 24, Kyree Young of Southeast, D.C., was taken into custody pursuant to a D.C. Superior Court arrest warrant. He has been charged under Title 16 as an adult with first-degree murder while armed.
The crash occurred on May 7 at approximately 4:15 a.m. in the intersection of 12th Street and U Street, Northwest. Officers responding to the scene found an adult male lying unconscious in a marked crosswalk. Despite medical efforts, the victim was pronounced dead at an area hospital.
Investigation Tied Suspect to White SUV
According to the Metropolitan Police Department, the pedestrian, later identified as 55-year-old Donnel Bracket Phillips of Northeast, D.C., was struck by a white Hyundai Santa Fe that fled the scene.
Detectives worked for over a month to identify Young as the driver of the vehicle involved in the hit and run.
Suspect Charged with First-Degree Murder
Young’s arrest marks a significant turn in the case, which had sparked community concern due to the violent nature of the crash and the fact that the driver failed to stop.
