Watch: Dog rescued from icy pond on New Year’s Day in first call of 2026

WESTERLY, RI – A golden retriever named Phoenix was pulled to safety on New Year’s Day after falling through thin ice on Little Maschaug Pond, marking the Misquamicut Fire Department’s first emergency call of 2026.

Just before 9 a.m., crews from the Misquamicut Fire Department, the Westerly Ambulance Corps, and the Westerly Police Department were dispatched to the pond off Atlantic Avenue after the dog, out for a morning walk with his owner, wandered onto the frozen surface and broke through near the center. The owner remained safely on shore as responders arrived.

Deputy Chief Howard (205) of Misquamicut immediately requested mutual aid from the Watch Hill Fire Department, calling for their ice rescue team and equipment. Firefighters from both departments were on scene within minutes, suiting up in cold-water rescue gear before entering the pond. Phoenix was located struggling in the frigid water but was quickly reached and brought back to shore using an inflatable rescue boat.

Both Phoenix and the rescuers were safe and doing well after the incident. Firefighters were evaluated by EMS for possible hypothermia but did not require treatment, officials said. Crews cleared the scene shortly after the rescue.
