NEW YORK, NY – Dariel Herrera and Zandrae Ennis have been indicted and arraigned on murder and attempted murder charges, respectively, in the shooting death of a 19-year-old Springfield Gardens man.

An indictment charging Herrera, 30, of Hale Avenue in Brooklyn, with murder in the second degree, attempted murder in the second degree, criminal possession of weapons in the second degree, and assault in the second degree was returned yesterday. Herrera was ordered to appear in court on February 3. Herera faces 25 years to life in prison if convicted.

On Thursday, Ennis, 22, of 205th Street, St. Albans, Queens, was arraigned on charges of attempted murder in the second degree, criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree, and reckless endangerment in the first degree.  Ennis was ordered to return to court on February 8.

Herrera was driving a BMW he had rented two days earlier in Brookville when he encountered four individuals, including Tysheem McDonald, 19, near the intersection of 148th Avenue and 231st Street. McDonald was shot in the chest and later died at a nearby hospital after being struck by several shots fired by the defendant with a pistol.  A second victim was struck in the leg.

“The only way to describe this incident is to say that it was as mindless and reckless as it was tragic. These arrests and indictments send the message that law enforcement will not put up with this kind of dangerous lawlessness,” Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz said today.
