MAGNOLIA, DE – Police are continuing to inevestigate a fatal collision that took place in Magnolia. The Delaware State Police are investigating the incident.
At approximately 7:25 p.m., an unidentified driver was traveling northbound on Bay Road just south of Trap Shooters Road in a Chrysler minivan. A Mercedes GKL was traveling southbound on Bay Road just south of Trap Shooters Road when the Chrysler exited the west edge of the roadway and entered the grass median for unknown reasons.
As a result of the impact, the vehicle entered the southbound lanes of Bay Road, causing a slight offset head-on collision with the Mercedes. Both vehicles caught fire as a result of the impact. The driver and passenger of the Mercedes were rescued safely by a good Samaritan.
Sadly, the driver of the Chrysler was pronounced dead at the scene. At the time of this news release, identification of the victim was still in progress.
The driver of the Mercedes, 58-year-old man from Lewes, was transported to an area hospital where he was admitted in critical condition. Additionally, a 59-year-old woman from Lewes, who sat in the Mercedes, was transported to a hospital where she was admitted with non-life-threatening injuries. Both dogs were inside the Mercedes at the time of the collision. Unfortunately, one of the dogs died. The Delaware Office of Animal Welfare was dispatched to the scene to take custody of the two animals.
As a result of the investigation and clearing of the scene, the roadway was closed for approximately three hours.
